# Deployment topologies

NodalMerge supports multiple deployment shapes depending on scale, governance, and workflow complexity.

This page helps you choose the right topology and evolve safely over time.

## Topology design axes

Pick topology based on:

* **Authority model**: open/cooperative vs policy-governed
* **Room model**: isolated rooms vs room families
* **Durability needs**: ephemeral vs restart-safe
* **Operational complexity tolerance**: minimal vs orchestrated pipelines

## Topology 1: Single-node bootstrap

One `nodalmerge-server` instance with local durable storage.

Best for:

* Early product development
* Internal pilots
* Low-traffic hosted environments

Typical characteristics:

* Simple operations and debugging
* Fast local iteration
* Minimal moving parts

## Topology 2: Hosted app + token bridge

NodalMerge server with external auth integration that mints room-scoped capability tokens.

Best for:

* Products with existing identity stack
* Environments requiring room/path write controls
* Teams needing short-lived token governance

Typical characteristics:

* Server remains sync authority
* Auth provider remains identity authority
* Capability scope controls client write surface

## Topology 3: Room-family governance (manager/worker)

Mainline and child work rooms with explicit lineage and promotion workflows.

Best for:

* Multi-agent/multi-worker orchestration
* Workflows where child outcomes must be promoted deterministically
* Auditable parent/child convergence requirements

Typical characteristics:

* Explicit parent checkpoint linkage for child rooms
* Promotion propose/validate/apply lifecycle
* Deterministic parent replay from accepted promotion artifacts

## Reference-only vs promotion-based room families

Room-family governance usually starts in one of two modes:

### Reference-only

Parent tracks child room metadata but does not deterministically merge child outcomes into parent canonical state.

Use when parent needs awareness/indexing only.

### Promotion-based

Child outputs flow through explicit promotion validation and application into parent canonical state.

Use when deterministic aggregation and governance controls are required.

## Topology evolution path

A practical progression:

1. Single-node durable bootstrap
2. Add external token/auth bridge
3. Introduce room-family workflows where needed
4. Tighten governance and promotion controls

Do not start with maximum topology complexity unless your workflow truly requires it.

## Deployment concerns by topology

### Single-node bootstrap

* Enable durable storage and backups
* Keep metrics private and monitored
* Validate restart hydration and replay checks

### Auth-bridged deployments

* Ensure token minting latency/reliability is operationally acceptable
* Rotate signing/verifier material with runbooks
* Monitor token-expiry disconnect behavior

### Room-family deployments

* Enforce lineage metadata completeness
* Monitor promotion queue depth and rejection reasons
* Validate parent replay determinism against accepted promotion history

## Failure-domain thinking

Regardless of topology, separate concerns:

* Sync transport failures
* Storage/persistence failures
* Auth/token failures
* Governance/promotion workflow failures

## Choosing your first production topology

Most teams should start with:

* Durable single-node deployment
* External auth/token bridge if needed
* Clear path to promotion-based room families later

Only adopt manager/worker room families once you need deterministic parent-child workflow governance.
